A new book dives into the dark history of the Catholic church and follows the enslavement of 272 Black Americans by Jesuit priests in 1838.
The author, Rachel Swarns, writes about race and race relations for The New York Times and is the author of “American Tapestry: The Story of the Black, White, and Multiracial Ancestors of Michelle Obama” and “Unseen: Unpublished Black History from the New York Times Photo Archives.”
Her latest book is called “The 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church.” Swarns joined NY1 anchors Rocco Vertuccio and Shannan Ferry Saturday morning on NY1 to talk about the book.
